Why BioMosquito?

We use Biogents traps: the only traps on the market proven by independent testing to be effective, with up to an 85% reduction in bites.

Other benefits of the BioMosquito system:

  • We offer full service hassle-free and economical diy options to meet the needs of more people.

  • Spraying, the most popular alternative to mosquito traps, can be toxic to kids, pets, and the environment.  Spraying is proven to damage the biodiversity and health of any ecosystem: harming native pollinators (bees, butterflies, ladybugs, etc.) and washing to streams and rivers.  Spraying is also potentially toxic to humans if it ends up in gardens or play areas.  Biogents traps do not require spraying and use no toxins whatsoever.

  • Minimal power consumption: only 4 watts.  That’s about one-half of a standard LED lightbulb.

How does it work?

The trap ‘pretends’ to be a human, luring mosquitos into it with a patented attractant-scent packet, heat, CO2, and a specially designed plastic case.  It doesn’t look like a human to us humans, but to a mosquito, it looks and smells like a delicious meal.

We include a CO2 timer with all of our traps to ensure that CO2 is utilized most efficiently.

How many traps do I need?

We can advise you on how many traps you’d benefit from based on your property size, how much mosquito-friendly habitat you have on your property, and where you spend most of your time outside.

Most ¼  to ½ acre properties will only need one trap.  Larger properties may benefit from 2 or more.  If you often spend time in different areas of your property (for example: on your front deck and back patio), you may benefit from more than one trap.

Each trap will catch mosquitos within a 65’ radius (130’ diameter), though it’s not necessary that you cover your entire property because mosquitos naturally explore different parts of their environment.  When they get within 65’ of your trap(s), they will be lured in to investigate the trap.

Client-owned option

If you are looking for the most economical option, you may decide to purchase and maintain the trap(s) yourself.  This is relatively simple: the most difficult part is exchanging the CO2 tank for a full one, which can be found at home-brew stores, or welding supply stores such as Roberts Oxygen (our recommendation if they are local to you) or Airgas.  Annual self-service costs are estimated to be about $200.

The trap must be periodically cleaned out to remove dead mosquitos. Also, the traps require 2 consumables in order to operate:

  • An attractant packet which must be replaced every 2 months.

  • CO2 which must be replaced periodically.  The interval depends on a number of factors but is usually every 1-2 months.

FAQ

Where does the CO2 come from?  CO2 tanks are filled with CO2 that is a byproduct of natural gas or other manufacturing processes.  This CO2 would otherwise be released directly into the atmosphere, so it’s just taking a detour through your mosquito trap.  Here’s an article that explains things in further detail: https://tinyurl.com/mozzieCO2 (The article is about seltzer water, but the CO2 for the traps comes from the same place.)

Is there anything else I need to do to keep the mosquitos away?  It’s still a good idea to remove mosquito breeding areas on your property: empty or completely cover rain barrels; remove old tires; empty plant saucers, buckets, and other water-holding containers; keep rain gutters clear.

How does the effectiveness of your traps compare to spraying?  See the graph below...
